We were the most racially diverse band of the 2-tone bands. We attempted a punky reggae cross-over in pop music labeled as ska music. Our particular sound was often ahead of its time and played out against a backdrop of “bankrupt Britain” and rampant racism. Within 6 months of forming, The Selecter had a top 10 hit and a gold debut album. The 2 tone movement had firmly established itself in the country’s psyche, especially after the 40 date legendary 2 Tone tour.
It was the first time that black and white youth unified themselves with an iconic style and energetic music. The movement defined the agenda for future British multi-culturalism in a way that nothing had before, or indeed has since.
It was homegrown in Coventry, but spread as a sub-culture throughout the world. Considering our music only lit up the charts for a brief two year span it has enjoyed a lasting legacy for the past thirty years and is still known world wide today and burns as one of the very few beacons of racial harmony in today’s mixed up, war hungry world.

3.What really happened with the selecter so that you choose to become a novelist and soloist?
Nothing happened with the Selecter. I just decided to do something different for a while, so The Selecter took a sabbatical. Every musician needs to re-charge their batteries and gain inspiration from other sources. It took me two years to thoroughly research and write my book. This was a process that I enjoyed very much. “My memoir “Black By Design” is published by Serpent’s Tail on Aug 4th. It is an autobiography.I reformed the Selecter with original lead singer Arthur Gaps Hendrickson last year in October 2010. Currently The Selecter is an 8 piece including a 2piece horn section. We are having great fun in 2011, gigging extensively all over Europe and recording our new album “Made In Britain”, which will be released on Sept 1st.
4. Who's your favorite ska singer in the era of two tone and ska singer in the current era.
My favourite ska singer in the 2-tone era was Dave Wakeling of The Beat. My favourite ska singer of the current era is in The Dualers.
5.There are many bands that really inspired you in the Jakarta area such as Es Coret and Merseyside, whether you have a suggestion for them?
The bands you mention are both excellent bands and as long as they keep on doing what they are doing, they should be very successful.
